Dandruff Control

If you suffer from dandruff, chances are you have fungus in your scalp!

A yeast-like fungus called Malassezia (pityrosporum-ovle) lives on the scalps of most adults in very low numbers.  While their numbers are kept under control on healthy scalps on regular basis, any alterations might cause their populations to explode.  An increase on oil or sebum, stress, UV lights, harsh chemical based shampoos or  lack of frequent hair washing can cause an increase of this fungus in our scalp.  As you can see, keeping a natural equilibrium can be very hard, since most of us are exposed to stress, UV lights, contamination, and chemical hair products.

Malassezia leaves an unhealthy residue in scalp that irritates it, causing it to flake.  Those flakes are the dreaded dandruff.  Malassezia is the primary cause of seborrheic dermatitis as well.

Getting rid of Malassezia is not easy:  once that the "colony" is established, it will thrive over the prescence of the natural oils found on hairs and scalp.  Malassezia can travel to your eyebrows, back of ears and spread to your hairline and neck, leaving patches of inflamated, flacky skin. 

To make matters worse, Malassezia sticks to your comb and brush:  so even if you wash your hair with a medicated shampoo, you re-introduce the fungus just by combing it!  Malassezia is very resistant to heat and regular soaps.  Therefore, even if you regularly wash you comb or brush in a normal fashion, the fungus will remain present and reporduce.

The usual lotions and medicated shampos usually over-dry hair, and the relief they bring is temporary:  without getting rid of the fungus, there will be no dandruff relief.
